Omega’s Ladymatic: classic piece for a modern girl

There are certain occasions which require sophisticated, understated diamonds. Such occasions as the ones where you need to be the pinnacle of Princessely elegance, or those that require you to don a sweeping, floor-length, velvet Bond-girl gown. For these evenings a timepiece like OMEGA’s Ladymatic – originally launched in 1955 and now refreshed for a new age – is more than well suited.

But what of the modern girl who prefers to sip her martinis in a leg-baring minidress and bed hair? Here’s where we’d say that such a watch still goes. While OMEGA’s campaign starring Nicole Kidman very much plays to the aforementioned classical elegance, we can also picture the watch peeping out, as a surprise twist, from underneath the leather sleeve of a vintage motorcycle jacket. Or piled up with bangles on a bare arm, with a little black dress. The key is to wear it for right occasions – wear it as a statement piece and everything else will fall inline; with that in mind, it’s possible to work it in with many of 2011′s fashion trends and beyond.

View the campaign from the newly relaunched Ladymatic, starring OMEGA’s brand ambassador Nicole Kidman, below, with a behind-the-scenes look at the campaign sitting below that.

Karl Lagerfeld, Chanel Take Tokyo

TOKYO — It may be fashion week here but there’s little doubt that Chanel is stealing the spotlight with a string of events underscoring the significance of the brand’s ties to Japan, just one year after the devastating tsunami disaster took place.

On Wednesday night, the house hosted a party to inaugurate Karl Lagerfeld’s new photography book and the opening of its exhibition, “The Little Black Jacket,” which runs through April 15, at an art gallery in Aoyama before traveling to eight other countries. Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld, who edited the book of black-and-white photographs of celebrities wearing the iconic garment, held court with a bevy of celebrities including Vanessa Paradis, Sarah Jessica Parker and current Chanel campaign model Alice Dellal.

“This is a special homage for Japan because after what happened, I thought it was a nice thing to do for Japan,” said Lagerfeld, who today will stage a reprise of Chanel’s spring-summer haute couture show at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, a large park in the city.

“It’s fun to see it again in another country, in another world, like on another planet with other people,” he said of the show. “It’s quite interesting. Maybe it will look like a different collection. I don’t know.”

The designer, who is making his first trip to Japan in eight years, spoke enthusiastically about his appreciation for the country, particularly the way it handled itself after last year’s tsunami. “I think they survived it pretty well and did it with great style and as a country [others] could learn from them,” he said.

Still, the ever dietary and weight-conscious Lagerfeld couldn’t resist another observation about the people here and how they have changed since his last visit close to a decade ago. “It’s changed a lot but it’s changed for the better I think. I noticed that people became bigger than before because now they eat more cake and sweets and things like this that they didn’t do in the past. There’s a real change in the look of the Japanese people. Normally, before, they were all tiny. It’s the kind of beauty you get from junk food,” he said.

Also on the topic of culinary pursuits, Lagerfeld was quick to add that his favorite spots in the city are the restaurants.

“You know I don’t eat bread, I don’t eat sugar, I don’t eat meat, so for me, the Japanese kitchen is perfect,” he said. Although he made one noteworthy exception. “I hate rice,” he said emphatically, recalling a time when he had to eat a rice-only diet for 11 days to recover from an illness. “After that I could never have rice again in my life.”

The designer said he likely won’t have much time for shopping, but he would like to check out the new Comme des Garçons Dover Street Market store. “I buy their men’s clothes in Paris at Colette so I want to have a look here,” he said.

Lagerfeld indeed has a busy schedule over the next few days. After today’s show, Chanel will throw open the doors on a three-week “ephemeral boutique” in the Omotesando area. An after party at a separate location will follow.

Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel’s fashion activities, said the trio of events aims to show that the brand, which has 36 fashion boutiques and 13 fine jewelry boutiques in Japan, is “optimistic for the future.”

The executive recalled one of his recent trips to Japan last June, just a few months after the massive quake struck the northeastern part of the country. He said it was similar to his being in the U.S. after 9/11.

“You know, it’s difficult to be someplace and to try to organize some business when people are suffering.…So it was not the best time, not at all,” he said.

Pavlovsky said Chanel’s business last year declined from 2010 levels but the first few months of 2012 are shaping up well so far. Still, he voiced caution about the coming months.

“When you are in Japan, you love Japan but sometimes they question themselves about the future,” he said, adding that Chanel’s local team has raised questions about the summer period and Japan’s energy supply.

Roitfeld noted that Tokyo’s lights seem a littler dimmer than her last visit 10 years ago, but the Japanese people’s enthusiasm for fashion seems just as strong as ever.

“They love fashion in a non-blasé way…they love it but they don’t take it too seriously,” she observed.

Betsey Johnson Launches Watches

Betsey Johnson launched her watch line last night at Haskell Jewels’ showroom, which hosted an intimate gathering.
Newly-minted Betsey Johnson brand owner Steve Madden was in attendance, perusing the watches with Gabrielle Fialkoff, chief operating officer of Haskell Jewels.

Johnson inspected the timepieces that surrounded her, and said of her licensing partnership with Haskell Jewels, “It was interesting to see the success of the jewelry, they really nailed me. They really got me down. And it was like, ‘Okay, how are we gonna do watches? Just like jewelry but with a tick-tock on it?’… But they took it to another level. The team here’s so amazing, they just design for the fun of it.”

Madden chimed in, “It’s easy though because she has such a clear aesthetic… she’s so clear in her vision, so its easy to jump on it and kind of extrapolate it.”

“And now I’m inspired constantly by my grandchildren,” said Johnson. “They wear pink constantly. Laila and Ella, they refuse to wear anything that’s not pink. They order online the most amazing little t-shirt tutu dresses that I feel like copying.”

The Betsey Johnson watch line spans 120 styles, myriad color palettes and several different technology formats.

Johnson, however, had her own favorites. “[When they were designing,] I kept saying, ‘Bigger, bigger, bigger!’ I like the heavy-duty. I always like the big ones. I don’t understand the digital, but I’m glad they went over to like, avatar. I could never read that.… But there’s a chunk of the collection that I like because the branding is subtle. Classy, especially in white. It doesn’t scream rosebuds and hearts and lips. It just hints… there’s a pink dial. There’s branding, but just a hint of branding.”

And like many a New York fashion designer, Johnson seemed to be still in the process of deciding details for her ready-to-wear show. When asked if the watches would be a part of the runway display, Johnson’s eyes widened as she yelled to her press rep, “Kaitlyn?! We’ve gotta get watches for the runway! Really.… We gotta get ‘em on the runway…What are we doing?”

Time for a unique DIY

While there’s a reason watches were invented with pockets and wrists in mind, they’re also an accessory to be worn with style. I know many a person who wears a watch purely as a non-functional statement piece (I can recall a conversation from the other day that I had with such a person; it was about ten in the morning and it went something like this: “Do yo have the time?” “Err, it’s three thirty.” “Right. Then why are we having breakfast..?”) So I was never too bothered by the practicality, or lack thereof, of Anne-Catherine’s collar watch as spotted last year.

This shot by Tommy Ton that surfaced more recently gives you a close-up view of the Hermes accessory. And the uniqueness of the whole idea still has its draw; this is something for the bold to try.

Danica Patrick’s New Ride

Danica Patrick is a girly-girl, but that doesn’t stop her from kicking butt on the racetrack at 200 miles an hour. The IndyCar driver, whose racing career started with go-karts when she was a child, has parlayed a successful career in auto racing into a multifaceted business résumé, one that includes swimsuit model for Sports Illustrated, Tissot watch ambassador .

“There are two pretty different sides to me,” Patrick says while getting ready for a recent Glamour magazine event at Barnard College.“I love to get clothes from stylists and get my hair and makeup done. I really enjoy both parts and I’m lucky to be able to drive race cars and still get made up. It’s a win-win.”

Patrick was in New York a few days after her sixth-place finish at the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix race, where she managed to battle her way up from 23rd place. It won’t be long, however, before she moves beyond the IndyCar circuit and races NASCAR full-time. For the past two years, she’s been racing in about a dozen NASCAR events as well as the Indy series. But after seven years focusing on Indy, she’s ready for a change.

“It’s like starting over again,” she says, excited about the challenges of racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series full time in 2012.

Patrick has had success in a sport where few women venture, but she says the men she races against never say anything about her photo shoots or swimsuit glam shots. “I don’t know, maybe they feel awkward.”

She also speculates that other women don’t gravitate toward race car driving because they aren’t exposed to it at a young age, as she was.

“They grow up playing basketball, baseball and football in gym class, but if they want to do something beyond that, it’s hard,” she says. “They need to buy a go-kart and find a track — that’s something that tends to be in your family.”

Her father raced snowmobiles, midgets and motocross, she says, so racing is in her blood.

But so is fashion. Though Patrick is intent on racing for at least the next several years, fashion design could be in her future. Right now, she has deals with Tissot for watches and William Rast for sunglasses, but has decided against an apparel sponsor. She says fashion firms have approached her about lending her name to apparel, but the timing hasn’t been right.

“I would like to either do a joint line with a designer, or —my favorite idea — do my own line,” she says. “But that’s down the road. I would have to give it the right amount of effort, choose the materials, the cuts, that’s what will make it a success.”

So for now, she’ll stick with other designer’s wares. When she’s not in the public eye, she leans toward jeans, T-shirts and ballet flats or flip-flops, or BCBG dresses. For more formal occasions, she prefers outfits with “unique lines and odd angles.” Most recently, she’s gravitated toward Alexander McQueen and Gucci.

“I like a unique look,” she says.

Tiger Woods Loves TAG Heuer

Tiger Woods Loves TAG Heuer
Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods (born December 30, 1975)[4][5] is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Formerly the World No. 1, he is the highest-paid professional athlete in the world, having earned an estimated US$90.5 million from winnings and endorsements in 2010.[6][7]

Woods has won 14 professional major golf championships, the second highest of any male player (Jack Nicklaus leads with 18), and 71 PGA Tour events, third all time behind Sam Snead and Nicklaus.[8] He has more career major wins and career PGA Tour wins than any other active golfer does. He is the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour. Additionally, Woods is only the second golfer, after Jack Nicklaus, to have achieved a career Grand Slam three times. Woods has won 16 World Golf Championships, and won at least one of those events in each of the first 11 years after they began in 1999.
Woods held the number one position in the world rankings for the most consecutive weeks and for the greatest total number of weeks of any other golfer. He has been awarded PGA Player of the Year a record ten times,[9] the Byron Nelson Award for lowest adjusted scoring average a record eight times, and has the record of leading the money list in nine different seasons.
On December 11, 2009, Woods announced he would take an indefinite leave from professional golf to focus on his marriage after he admitted infidelity. His multiple infidelities were revealed by over a dozen women, through many worldwide media sources.[10][11] Woods returned to competition on April 8, 2010 for the 2010 Masters,[12] after a break lasting 20 weeks.
On October 31, 2010, Woods lost the world number one ranking to Lee Westwood.[7] As of November 21, 2011, Woods is ranked #51 in the world.[13] This is up slightly from a low of #58 in early November.[14] That was his lowest rank since October 19, 1996, more than 15 years ago, when he was ranked 61st; he had turned professional in late August 1996.[15] Since mid-November 2009, shortly before the infidelity scandals began breaking in the media, Woods has been winless worldwide for two years, the longest streak without a title of his professional career. He is winless on the PGA Tour since September 2009.
Woods announced via his website on July 6, 2011 that he would miss the 2011 Open Championship, his second straight unplayed major championship, since he was taking time off from competitive golf to heal injuries to his left knee and ankle.[16] On July 20, Woods announced via his website that he was firing his caddy Steve Williams, who had worked for him since 1999; the two had teamed for 13 of Woods’ 14 major championships. Williams will now caddy for Australian star Adam Scott.[17] On July 27, Woods announced via his Twitter account that he would return to tournament play on August 4 for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, following a break of 11 weeks. Woods announced via his website on Sept. 26, 2011 that Joe LaCava would become his permanent caddy; LaCava had most recently caddied for Dustin Johnson, and before that Fred Couples for an extended period.
